The Catholic Church will celebrate World Mission Sunday on October23, 2016 with the theme “Missionary Church, Witness of Mercy.” Started ninety years ago (1926) by Pope Pius XI, World Mission Sunday is always celebrated as a day of prayer and information drive on the importance of mission throughout the Catholic world.

In his message Pope Francis said that “the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, which the Church is celebrating, casts a distinct light on World Mission Sunday 2016: it invites us to consider the missio ad gentes as a great, immense work of mercy, both spiritual and material.” The Pope’s message adds new challenge to the Philippine Church as it prepares for the 5th centenary of the Coming of Christianity to the Philippines.

The celebration of World Mission Sunday also invites everyone to reflect on the meaning of one’s Christian baptism wherein everyone is called to share God’s message of salvation to all. As Pope Francis reminds: “On this World Mission Sunday, all of us are invited to ‘go out’ as missionary disciples, each generously offering their talents, creativity, wisdom and experience in order to bring the message of God’s tenderness and compassion to the entire human family. By virtue of the missionary mandate, the Church cares for those who do not know the Gospel, because she wants everyone to be saved and to experience the Lord’s love.”

There will be a special collection in all masses on this special day which will form part of the contribution of the Philippine Church to the Solidarity Fund of the Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith. In his appeal for support, Fr. Socrates Mesiona, National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in the Philippines, said that ” One concrete act of mercy that we can do is to support the Solidarity Fund of the Society for the Propagation of Faith. Last year we were able to concretely make a difference when we shared our World Mission Sunday collection to help young Churches in Ethiopia in Africa.”
